YOUR AUTHORITY AND POWER, WATCH IT

Luke 4:3 and 9

The devil in these references asked Jesus to utilize His authority, power to do certain things. In verse 3, he asked Jesus to use His authority as the true Son of God to command the stones to become bread. To a larger extent, Jesus is the true Son of God and He has the authority and power to command the stones to turn into bread.

In verse 9 too, Jesus is the true Son of God and can throw Himself from that pinnacle to the ground. Jesus is God and nothing can happen to Him. Even if angels will not assist Him as quoted by the devil from Psalm 91, He is God and nothing will happen to Him. He has the power and authority to exercise it.

However, what was the attitude of Jesus Christ from the passage? HE DID NOT. Beloved, let us be careful of WHEN and WHERE we exercise our authority and power.

In the house you have that power and authority as the husband, father, Pastor to exercise it but in doing so can or may ruin your marriage, destroy your image and reputation. You are the mother, wife and the bread winner and you have that authority and power but in an attempt to prove it, you may lose your integrity.

You are the Reverend Minister, you carry authority and power, manager in that office, police or military officer on the road controlling traffic, parliamentarian, nurse, doctor, lawyer, judge, chief, family head, headmaster or headmistress, teacher, landlord or landlady, etc or you carry a high position, know how you prove it. Jesus had it but wasn’t in the position to prove it.

The right time will come, wait for the proper time and exercise it.

May God help and open our eyes when the devil through people want us to prove our power and authority to them. It might lead you to sin. Be sober and be led by the Spirit of God.

PUT TO DEATH – THE WAY FORWARD; A MUST READ; SERIES VII

At last he came to his senses and said, All my father’s hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am to starved. I will get up and go to my father and say, Father, I have sinned against God and against you. … So he got up and started back to his father. Luke 15:17-18, 20

In bringing my series ‘Put to Death’ to an end, I will want to highlight on few points that will help all of us.

1.    Realise the situation, the habit, character and admit that it is not good. The young man came to his senses. He realised the situation and admitted it. He did not defend himself, using all forms of ideologies, human wisdom and worldly knowledge to buttress his action. He realised it.

2.   Take a decision. Make up your mind. Decide to deal with the issue. The young man decided to go back to his father. This is humility, coming to the point that you cannot help yourself but need an external support – the Holy Spirit.

3.   Confess and ask for forgiveness from those sins. The young man made confessions (I have sinned against my father and God and asked that his father and God should forgive him.

4.   Take the step and stop those behaviours. It is difficult but with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can put to death those behaviours. The young man stepped out from that foreign country back to his homeland.

5.   Dissociate yourself from friends who practice those behaviours. The young man stepped out from that country – broke friendship with the people in that city.

6.   Finally, engage in the spiritual exercisestudying the Bible, meditate on the Bible, fasting, praying and sharing the Word of God with others.

PUT TO DEATH – COVETOUSNESS (GREED); A MUST READ; SERIES V

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: covetousness (greed). Colossians 3:5

The Greek word that is translated “greed” or “covetousness” is pleonexia, and it refers to a person desiring to have more than he needs, or more than his share.

The English word “greed” is a selfish and excessive desire to have more than one need.

Another meaning of covet is wanting something that belongs to someone else. “You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife” (Exodus 20:17).

By selfishly desiring to take and /or acquire more than we need, we are elevating ourselves in an unhealthy way. One major reason for greed is not trusting God to take care of us.

Putting to death means the inability to function, not active. This requires self-discipline, being cautious at all times, taking a firm decision with the help of the Holy Spirit. Put to death greed.

A daily walk with Jesus Christ, in total obedience and by faith will help you to put to death greed. Be content with what you have.

Examples of covetousness: Chasing after someone’s wife / husband whereas the person is married – David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11. You may have a reason but the bottom line is greedy. Another example is the story of Gehazi in 2 Kings 5:20-27.

We must PUT TO DEATH COVETOUSNESS (GREED).

PUT TO DEATH - ANGER, WRATH, MALICE, SLANDER, OBSCENE & LIES; A MUST READ; SERIES VI

But now you must put them away: anger, wrath (extreme anger), malice (desire to inflict injury, harm or suffering on someone), slander (a false statement spoken about a person with the intention of damaging the person’s reputation), and obscene (indecent) talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another Colossians 3:8-9a

Six things in addition to what has been discussed previously have been added to what we need to put to death.

Anger when not controlled graduates to wrath that is extreme of it. The product of anger and wrath when not controlled is the strong willingness to inflict injury or harm the person – malice. In some cases, the least he or she will do is to begin spreading false statement about the person with the sure hope of damaging his or her reputation.

Other product of anger when not controlled is indecent talk about the person. It also results in telling lies concerning the person. It is not uncommon nowadays to see people easily angered over trivial issues. The tribal wars, conflicts, disputes and character assassination we see in Ghana emancipates from uncontrolled behaviours the writer mentions in Colossians 3:5,8-9. Put to death these behaviours.

Tomorrow God willing, I will end the series by highlighting on ways to put to death these behaviours.

PUT TO DEATH – EVIL DESIRES; A MUST READ; SERIES IV

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: evil desire. Colossians 3:5

Putting to death means the inability to function, not active. This requires self-discipline, being cautious at all times, taking a firm decision with the help of the Holy Spirit. Put to death evil desires.

A daily walk with Jesus Christ, in total obedience and by faith will help you to put to death evil desires.

Evil is anything which is not good. The will and wish to do anything which is not good is desiring to do evil.

Examples of evil desire: alcoholism, taking of hard drugs such cocaine, tramadol and the like, fornicating, masturbation, lesbianism, stealing, cheating in marriage, in relationship, in the office, in the exam hall, at the market place etc.

Another examples of evil desire are: envying your colleague, plotting evil against him or her, destroying your colleague through false witnessing, hatred etc.

We must PUT TO DEATH EVIL DESIRES.
